The Long Emergency: Surviving the End of Oil, Climate Change, and Other Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-First Century

James Howard Kunstler

There is a set of erroneous popular notions to the effect that renewable energy systems such as solar power, wind power, and the like are available as freestanding replacements for our fossil-fuel-based system, that they are pollution-free and problem free —that renewables represent something akin to perpetual motion, a gift from the sun. The operation of a solar electric system, like the one I run on an Adirondack lake, does not itself produce pollution, but the manufacturing of the components certainly does.

We believe that monumental changes will soon emerge in areas like health and medicine, renewable energy, global finance and politics. The things most people accept as "normal" today -- direct-to-consumer drug advertising, the drugging of our children with psychiatric drugs, the widespread fluoridation of public water supplies, and so on -- will someday be viewed as nothing less than insane. Future historians will be stunned at the ignorance and arrogance of today's world, much as we find it hard to believe today that the world's brightest scientists once insisted the Earth was flat.

I realize that we're a relatively small operation, and there are many deserving products we should be covering but just haven't had the resources to cover yet, but we're working to grow our operations so that we can bring you more news, more health solutions and more information on relevant topics like global warming, renewable energy and green living. We will do it all, of course, with the same standard we apply to covering nutritional products: no payola. It's a simple ethical standard, really. And I consider it fundamental to the issue of credibility.

Another myth has to do with "intermit-tency," the idea that renewable energy sources cannot provide power reliably. It's true that photovoltaics are ineffective at night, and wind turbines are nonproductive in still air, but when used together, alternative energy sources can deliver a steady flow of power. No one source of renewable, clean power is going to single-handedly replace our current energy infrastructure. Instead, we're going to see a mix of technologies, policies, and systems.

Let's see, you'd have a renewable energy source, you'd have a crop that's good for the environment, a crop that doesn't need to be grown with pesticides or herbicides. Wouldn't that be terrible? To re-invigorate the whole farming industry in this country? Gotta outlaw hemp, but keep those drugs pumping. Keep that drug economy pumping! Keep that drug industry legal. Keep on poisoning the hearts, minds, bodies and nervous systems of all the people in this country. You've got to keep them on drugs. Why? Well, drugs are profitable. We're all invested in the drug companies.

For my part, I'm forming important alliances with other positive influencers and leaders in complementary fields like environmental protection, sustainable farming, animal welfare, self improvement and renewable energy. Together, we can help bring genuine solutions to the forefront and challenge the outmoded thinking of the current global power brokers, replacing it with community-minded, holistic solutions that recognize the interdependency of all living beings and systems on this planet. All this isn't new-age hippie talk (not that there's anything wrong with that!

Reinheriting the Earth: Awakening to Sustainable Solutions and Greater Truths

Little has been allocated to clean and renewable energy. Why must we stand by helplessly and watch this selfish lobbying take over our lives? Couldn't we expand our choices? What has happened to our democracy of one person, one vote? We must be aware that the political and social obstacles to change are far greater than the perceived technological and economic obstacles. From Economic Elitism to Ecological Realism Not only are politicians being bought out, but the inequality in wealth among the world's people keeps growing and the U.S. once again leads the way.

Many of these ideas are offshoots of others, building and growing as a hyacinth grows.

While conventional renewable energy options are basically clean and sustainable, they are often susceptible to high capital costs, diffusiveness and intermittence. They can also appreciably alter the landscape with unsightly dams, turbines, windmills and solar farms. Our choices among the renewables will require a careful look at each option and its environmental impact. Meanwhile, government subsidies and market manipulation have kept the fossil fuel industry in power, and the 18 per cent we use for renewables globally is not increasing. Only with a public awakening can these numbers change.

If successful, these efforts could trump every unrenewable and renewable energy option which has been scrutinized, advocated and developed. All other energy technologies would look crude by comparison and could be abandoned once and for all. This discovery would then become as historically significant as the invention of the steam engine, internal combustion engine, electric light, alternating current, solar photovoltaics, transistors, lasers, computers, jet engines, and fuel cells.

By this definition conventional renewable energy is not new energy. Included under new energy are cold fusion technology, plasma or gas cells, charge clusters, underwater arcing, magnetic motors, solid state devices, electrostatic devices, hydrosonic devices and many others (see Appendix I for details about the state of the art). Each of these approaches appears to produce much more energy than can be accounted for by traditional physics, although a number of viable theories are being published in the peer-reviewed literature.
Chapter 4). It is ironic that the greatest seat of the problem is also the greatest seat of the solution: America. We shall need to find ways to reconcile these polar opposites residing in the very same land so that we can surmount the problems and arrive at the solutions. If they cannot be reconciled here in the U.S., those of us who are solution-oriented may need to expatriate ourselves from a leadership based on destructive and unnatural principles.

Because these costs are hidden and not reflected in energy costs, and because government support for renewables has nearly vanished, renewable energy sources have not been given a fair chance to replace more polluting energy sources. In 1985, renewable sources, including windpower, small-scale hydro, geothermal, biomass, and solar energy, accounted for almost 5 percent of total U.S. energy consumption. Since 1976, the price of photovoltaic cells, which convert sunlight directly to electricity, has dropped by a factor of 10. The world market for photo-voltaics has grown fifty fold.
In the 1970s, the oil embargo and the meteoric rise in oil prices created a crisis in fossil fuel-generated energy, a crisis that sparked public interest in energy conservation and renewable energy sources. This broad-based enthusiasm for saving finite nonrenewable fossil fuels coincided with a more idealistic alternative energy movement to "design with nature." A graduate student in engineering at the height of this movement, I was inspired to develop a JL S S prototype solar sunspace for my thesis topic.
The full costs of nuclear power, including decommissioning and waste disposal, keep rising while the costs of renewable energy are decreasing. In a comparative analysis of nuclear power and energy conservation through energy efficiency, the Rocky Mountain Institute found that "electrical efficiency is nearly seven times more effective in abating C02 (per dollar invested in the United States) than nuclear power." Nuclear energy does not meet the criteria of a good global insurance plan against global warming.
Global warming has revived government and industry hopes for nuclear power. Like renewable energy sources, it does not generate C02 nor contribute to global warming; so its advocates now portray it as almost ecological. I have heard supporters of nuclear power argue that radioactive waste disposal is no different a problem than naturally occurring radioactivity. Since we live with one, they ask, why can't we live with the other?

An impossible job? Yes and no. Our focus now is to consume ever more resources and to make our money grow faster and faster. We must therefore outlaw our destruction of Gaia at all significant levels and reallocate those resources to restoration. We must preserve what's left and invest in what will clearly become our most precious resource: the awesome bounty and diversity of Earth. Our mantra ought to be, preserve, restore and sustain. As a species, we will need to create a moral shift in attitude so we can organize and get on with the job. This will be the focus of the next chapter.

I've listed here general alternative-energy catalogs that have a wide range of products that can help you convert to alternative energy either partially or entirely, or experiment with single appliances such as solar fans that can be powered by renewable energy. Most alternative-energy systems use some kind of natural power to charge and recharge batteries that are then used as the power source.
The best heat, of course, comes from renewable energy. Use add-on greenhouses, window-box solar room heaters, and super-efficient wood stoves. Tune up your furnace. Gas furnaces should be tuned every two years and oil furnaces each year. Test your furnace for combustion efficiency and pollutants, clean it, and adjust it. A heating technician will do this fot you for about fotty to sixty dollars. With a fotced-air system, change yout filters (or bettet, clean reusable ones) once a month to save enetgy and minimize dust.

Solar Relying more on energy conservation and renewable energy and less on the planet's limited supply of fossil fuels is the most socially responsible way to heat your house. Even though our government is no longer supporting solar energy with tax credits, as it did in the late 1970s and early 1980s, solar heating is still a viable alternative economically. The starting point for a passive solar house or sun-room is good southern exposure. Next, bear in mind that the best passive designs strike a subtle balance between insulation, thermal mass, and the amount of south glazing used.
He rejects fossil fuels—gas, oil, kerosene, wood, coal—because they are not renewable energy sources and they pollute the air inside houses with deadly gases. But most of us don't have the luxury of switching to the healthiest heating fuels available. We must live with what we've got, possibly updating and maintaining it so it's as healthy and inexpensive to operate as possible. Here's a rundown of the various types of heating fuels and what you can expect from them in a healthy home. Oil In December 1976, heating oil was selling for 43 cents a gallon. Four years later, we were paying $1.
