The second is our quest for energy efficiency. Such things as air-lock 64 entries, walls and attics packed with insulation, tightly caulked windows, and even windows that do not open greatly reduce the number of times stale indoor air is exchanged with fresh outdoor air. The same tightening and insulating measures that enable our houses to store heat efficiently also trap pollutants inside while adding new toxins to the air from caulks, adhesives, and insulation. The tighter the house, the worse the problem.

Computing energy efficiency as the ratio of energy obtained to energy expended, Thomas found that quinoa yielded 50 percent more energy than potatoes per unit of land. Civilization could not survive in this harsh, cold climate without the Andean grains. The peasant population of southern Bolivia's barren salt flats is even more dependent on quinoa than the people of Nunoa because their land lacks enough moisture to grow potatoes except in very limited areas of irrigation. Quinoa not only will grow with just five to ten inches of rainfall annually but also tolerates salty, alkaline soils.

This supplement, known by its chemical name ubiquinone, improves the heart's energy efficiency. One Italian study found that an average dosage of 100 milligrams per day for three months reduced fluid retention and stopped palpitations in more than 70 percent of the people who took CoQ]0. ž See also ANEMIA; ANGINA; ATHEROSCLEROSIS; DIABETES; HEART ATTACK; HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE; HYPERTHYROIDISM; and OBESITY in Part Two. Our body really needs regular exercise and a long-term, steady, lower-calorie diet plan to adapt to a lower weight and better energy efficiency, or "turning our thermostat down." The "fat cell" theory also applies here, and seems to correlate with the "set point" philosophy. It has been shown that we each develop a specific number of fat cells in our body. This mainly occurs at certain times of life—before birth, during infancy, and during the adolescent growth phase.

Magnesium deficiency decreases energy efficiency and research has shown that people who are deficient in magnesium may use more energy during exercise. In a recent study, USDA researchers investigated the amount of oxygen needed by healthy women over 50 to perform a certain amount of low intensity work on an exercise bicycle. When their dietary magnesium was inadequate (150 mg daily) they used 10 to 15 per cent more oxygen to perform the work and their heart rates climbed by about ten beats per minute.

Indoor air pollution has become a problem in the past decade because of the combination of sealing up our homes for energy efficiency without appropriate air-exchange equipment, and filling them with more and more toxic products. Particleboard furniture and cabinets, cleaning products, pesticides, plastics and synthetic fibers used in furnishing and construction, carpeting, drapes, scented items, gas appliances and heaters, and many other common items made from petrochemicals all contribute to an increase in indoor air pollution.

But a new house designed and built for energy efficiency will exchange its air volume as seldom as twice a day. Tightening a house will not cause a pollution problem, but it can aggravate an existing one. If a home already has high pollutant levels, house-tightening measures will slightly increase the risk of health problems. New extra-tight buildings can maintain good indoor air quality if pollution sources are minimized and if adequate ventilation is supplied mechanically Heat and Humidity Have an Effect Tight houses aren't the only reason for poor indoor air quality.

In fact, by using already existing energy-efficiency measures, we can cut our total energy use in half or better without affecting production or service. energy efficiency is the most cost-effective way to meet our energy needs and dramatically reduce pollution. It is difficult, however, to consider these things when we are choosing products. In order to evaluate the energy appropriateness of a product, we would need to know how much energy was used in taking raw materials, as well as in its manufacture, transportation, use, and disposal.

The air quality was improved without sacrificing energy efficiency. THE POLLUTANTS In large measure, it wasn't until scientists began to better understand the adverse health effects of three indoor air pollutants—asbestos, formaldehyde, and radon—that they began to be concerned about indoor air quality in general. Asbestos surfaced as a significant problem in the 1960s, formaldehyde in the 1970s, and radon in the 1980s.
Central air conditioners: Central air conditioners are rated according to the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER), the ratio of the cooling output to the power consumption. There are three efficiency classes: standard systems (commonly installed by builders) have SEERs around 8, better systems have SEERs around 10, and premium systems have SEERs above 12. The national appliance efficiency standard for split-system central air conditioners (the most common type) will take effect in 1992, requiring a minimum SEER of 10.
GLAZING In the name of energy efficiency, today's windows come in a parade of tints, each one proclaimed the best for a specific function. The only thing wrong with them is the spectrum of light they admit. As we have seen, the healthiest light contains the full spectrum of the sun. Tinted and low-emissivity glass block a wide range of that natural spectrum in the visible range, as well as in the infrared and ultraviolet light ranges. While ordinary window glass admits a fuller spectrum of visible light, it blocks as much as 95 percent of the ultraviolet range.

If this hypothesis is true, riboflavin, which has the potential of increasing mitochondrial energy efficiency, might have preventive effects against migraine. To test this hypothesis, 49 patients suffering from migraine were treated with a very large dose (400 mg daily) of riboflavin for at least 3 months.38 Overall improvement after therapy was 68.2% in the riboflavin group as determined by the migraine severity score used in the study. No side-effects were reported.

We can reduce how much energy we use two ways: conservation (things such as turning off lights when you aren't in the room) and energy efficiency (things such as using energy-efficient light bulbs, which give you the same amount of light for less energy). By taking already known energy-conservation and efficiency measures, we can cut our total energy use in half or better (some estimates go as high as 80 percent) without affecting our quality of life. Cutting our energy use will also reduce the energy pollution that causes smog, acid rain, climate change, and other environmental problems.

Since the house had been tightened up for energy efficiency, there was a shortage of air for the gas combustion furnace. When the furnace kicked on, it couldn't get the air it needed from the tightened-up basement, so it drew air from the living spaces in the house. It began sucking air down the fireplace chimney. Unfortunately, when the wind was just right, that sucked-in air was badly contaminated with carbon monoxide exhausted from the furnace through an adjacent flue on the roof.
